Exciting Opportunity for an Inclusive and Collaborative Student Affairs Leader

Le Moyne College is pleased to announce its search for the Associate Provost for Student Development; ideally, the selected candidate will join the community in January, 2022. As the senior student affairs officer, the Associate Provost is responsible for significant functional areas that engage with students before and during their time at the College.  The new Associate Provost must have the experience, interest, and skills to provide leadership and guidance to the Student Development professional staff, while fostering and supporting collaborative and innovative approaches to educating students in a holistic manner that reflects the Jesuit mission of the College. This position, reporting to the Provost and serving on the President’s Senior Leadership Team, is intentionally structured to foster partnerships across campus that enable the College to meet its commitment to student success and completion. 

The Associate Provost will guide, mentor, challenge, and inspire a team of experienced professionals, while supporting the exploration of opportunities for innovation. Other essential attributes of the Associate Provost include a commitment to fostering an inclusive community that affirms the dignity of all persons; the ability to manage change; experience responding to and managing crises; an understanding of legal issues, such as Title IX; and an appreciation of being a part of an institution that is guided by its Jesuit values. The Associate Provost is expected to be a visible presence on campus and to engage with students directly in order to advocate for them individually and collectively. 

Position Overview

Firmly committed to the mission of Le Moyne College, the Associate Provost for Student Development (AP), the College’s senior student affairs officer, provides vision, leadership, and management oversight for all co-curricular programs, services and activities. Reporting to the Provost and serving as a member of the President’s Senior Leadership Team, the AP serves as a strong advocate for students and for a variety of student constituent groups. The AP represents student concerns and aspirations to the broader campus community and is charged with strengthening the campus community while enhancing links between the academic and residential aspects of the College. An experienced college-wide leader and student affairs professional, the AP will bring vision and ambition to promote a culture of inclusion and diversity, student retention and degree completion, student academic and personal development, and community engagement. Additionally, the AP will support the ongoing and dynamic progress of the College in light of its Catholic and Jesuit mission and identity. 

The following departments report to the Associate Provost for Student Development: Residence Life; Student Success; Wellness Center for Health and Counseling; Campus Life and Leadership, Title IX; Conduct and Judicial Affairs; Special Events; and grant-sponsored enrichment programs.

Essential Functions

The Associate Provost for Student Development:

  • Promotes the mission and vision of Le Moyne College within the context of goals, objectives and best practices of Student Development;
  • Further develops and supports a staff that is student-centered, collaborative, optimistic, excited about change, responsive, innovative, energetic, and results oriented;
  • Leads the review, development, implementation, financial management, and assessment of policies and procedures;
  • Helps to develop and shape an environment in which inclusion and diversity are fostered and affirmed;
  • Encourages student leadership and creativity, and supports an active student body with a strong sense of community;
  • Collaborates with all major sectors of the College in cultivating a learning-centered culture for undergraduate, graduate and non-traditional students;
  • Identifies standards of excellence in managing and developing student programming and activities to ensure that students are engaged in campus life and foster a vibrant campus community;
  • Oversees all processes related to student crisis intervention, coordinated response to all campus emergencies, and crisis resolution, including responding to major incidents and working to minimize risk (major and minor) to the College;
  • Oversees orientation programs for first-year students;
  • Assesses housing needs and develops and implements a strategy that addresses those needs to enhance the quality of student life; 
  • Working with the senior leadership team, develops and implements strategies that ensure adequate and appropriate facilities to serve our students’ needs; 
  • Coordinates with other College offices in promoting student outreach to the community;
  • Supervises judicial processes to address infractions of College norms with oversight of due process and the administration of applicable College policies and procedures;
  • Fosters long-term, collaborative, and strategic relationships with academic and co-curricular units of the College as well as community and regional leaders;
  • Fosters the development of co-curricular programs and activities that meet the needs of diverse groups while supporting the full integration of Le Moyne’s student body; 
  • Develops operational, strategic, and long-range plans in consultation with the other members of the College leadership team and faculty, including effective strategies for increasing student retention and persistence;
  • Manages the financial operations of Student Development, and prepares annual budgets for each fiscal year;
  • Prepares and submits reports to the Provost which describe the programs and activities being carried out by Student Development; and
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned by the Provost.

Qualities and Qualifications

The successful candidate shall be a forward-thinking, consensus building, highly influential student affairs expert who will help develop, lead and implement policies and practices that support the College-wide student experience. The position requires a leader of integrity and intelligence with strategic vision, demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, excellent management skills, and an understanding of innovative approaches to improving student success through coordinated student affairs programming.

Earned Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field required. Ph.D., J.D., Ed.D. or other terminal degree strongly preferred.

Candidates for the position of Associate Provost for Student Development must demonstrate:  

  • A record of successful administrative and management experience, assessment, and the ability to lead a complex organization;
  • A clear commitment to leading and mentoring a talented staff and to investment in their ongoing professional development;
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal and listening skills;
  • An understanding of and commitment to Catholic, Jesuit education and the College’s mission;
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking, and the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, trustees, the College community and external constituencies;
  • Substantial knowledge of legal issues in higher education, including an understanding of Title IX and its administration;
  • The ability to appropriately respond to emergencies and crises and to plan for, and lead others in, these situations;
  • A passion for and experience in creating an integrated intellectual community for students, in academic and residential life; 
  • The ability to develop and articulate a clear and compelling vision which engages staff, faculty, and students;
  • Knowledge of contemporary theories and practices of student development, student retention, campus environment design, and leadership;
  • A deep understanding of the issues and dynamics of difference and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism, as well as the ability to develop and implement a comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy;
  • Skill in collaborating with administrators, staff, and faculty in developing and sustaining long-term strategic partnerships and relationships; and
  • Financial acumen, financial and organizational management experience, and the ability to address fiscal constraints collaboratively and creatively.
