Exciting Counseling Center Leadership Opportunity 

The University of Texas at Dallas is continuing its search for the position of Director, Student Counseling Center and invites applications and nominations immediately. As the University and the Student Counseling Center have gone through rapid growth and change, this is an exciting opportunity to provide innovative solutions to meeting the needs of a highly diverse and global student population in a dynamic environment. Keeling & Associates is working with the University to identify an experienced clinician and administrator to provide leadership and direction for a dedicated staff of mental health practitioners as they support students through direct service, outreach, consultation, and crisis intervention. In addition to guiding, mentoring, and consulting with the staff, the Director must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to diversity and inclusion that will enhance the services offered to students and nurture a supportive work environment. The Director is expected to develop strong, collaborative working relationships across campus to facilitate efforts to support student success; the commitment to be a visible and engaged member of the campus community is essential to being successful in this position. As an APA accredited training site, the SCC provides excellent opportunities for the Director and staff to influence the future of the profession while providing additional clinical support for students.

The Student Counseling Center (SCC) provides a safe, affirming and non-judgmental environment in which students can openly explore their mental health concerns and expectations. The SCC utilizes a short-term model, and the services are goal-focused and brief, providing resources, solutions and strategies to deal with individual concerns. Services offered in the SCC include individual, couple, and group counseling as well as consultation, outreach, workshops, and psychiatric services. The Director is responsible for the oversight of all activities within the SCC and also oversees the Center for Students in Recovery, an office dedicated to proving support to students who are living in recovery.

The Student Counseling Center is one component of Health and Wellness Initiatives in the Division of Student Affairs. This structure stresses the University’s commitment to the holistic well-being of its students. In addition to SCC, Health and Wellness Initiatives includes the Student Health Center, the Student Wellness Center, Student AccessAbility, and University Recreation. The Director interacts regularly with staff, faculty, students, and other members of the campus community in order to consult and educate on topics related to student mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Position Summary and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students for Health and Wellness Initiatives, the Director is responsible for the general oversight of the Student Counseling Center, which has an American Psychological Association accredited training program. The Director provides vision and leadership in establishing and monitoring the scope and direction of the Center, ensuring its operation is consistent with national standards of practice. The Director is responsible for the direct oversight and management of the Center to include personnel management, assessment, budget management, policy formation, logistics, and strategic planning. The Director also serves as the primary liaison from the Center to the University and surrounding community. As a licensed clinician, the Director provides direct counseling and education services to students; consultation to students, faculty, and staff; and clinical supervision to doctoral interns. The Director ensures staff and programs work collaboratively with other Student Affairs departments, faculty, and staff. The Director also oversees the Center for Students in Recovery.

In addition to those mentioned above, the responsibilities of the Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee the hiring, training, and work performance of a staff of approximately 13 licensed psychologists/counselors, 2 psychiatric providers, 3 doctoral interns, 3 practicum students, part-time contract counselors, 2 support staff, and 2 staff members in the Center for Students in Recovery.
  • Along with three Assistant Directors, act as a senior consultant to staff and trainees regarding the scope of services, challenging clinical situations, and assessment of risk.
  • Serve as a core member of the Behavioral Assessment Intervention Team (BAIT).
  • Work closely with the Director of the Student Health Center to provide coordinated mental/behavioral health services.
  • Ensure the staff are trained to provide prompt, organized, and competent crisis response.
  • Share duties for evening and weekend on-call back up to after-hours services provided by ProtoCall.
  • Ensure operation of the pre-professional training program within the standards of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral Internship Centers (APPIC).
  • Work closely with Training Director in identifying and implementing changes in the training program necessary to comply with standards of the American Psychological Association.
  • Collaborate with the Directors of the Student Wellness Center, Student Health Center, University Recreation, Office of Student AccessAbility, and the Center for Students in Recovery to establish coordinated, multi-culturally informed, inclusive, and comprehensive services for students on campus.
  • Contribute to the university community by serving on committees, program involvement, outreach, other campus-wide activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Current licensure in the State of Texas or current licensure in another state and eligible to obtain Texas licensure within 12 months of beginning the position.
  • At least seven years of related experience in a mental health setting and three years of relevant and successful experience in a comparably complex and sized university counseling center and/or mental health organization, including experience:
    • supervising and evaluating employees,
    • resolving conflicts, and
    • encouraging a diverse staff to work well together.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an APA accredited doctoral program and/or completed an APA accredited internship.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • At least one year of experience in a college or university counseling center.
  • Prior experience as a Director of a college counseling center.
  • Experience with recovery and addiction.
