The University of San Diego is seeking a Clinical Director of Mental and Behavioral Health to join a talented team of professionals dedicated to enhancing the holistic well-being of students and embracing the University’s commitment to compassionate service. The Clinical Director oversees the management and operations of the Counseling Center and works closely with the Senior Director of Mental and Behavioral Health to ensure the delivery of high-quality services that support and address the needs of the University’s diverse student population. 

This is an exciting role for a caring and collaborative clinician and leader with a strong understanding of, and commitment to addressing, the mental health needs of university students. With a focus on equitable access and a high duty of care, the Clinical Director develops partnerships with a wide range of constituents and advises and coaches the University community to best support students and promote their success.

The successful candidate will be an experienced, knowledgeable, and engaged clinician with a strong record of clinical, administrative, and supervision experience; demonstrated expertise in crisis intervention and management; strong decision-making, communication, and interpersonal skills; the ability to work collaboratively in supporting diverse student populations and ensuring health equity and access; and a deep appreciation for USD’s Catholic identity, values, and mission to foster respect and dignity for all.


About the Counseling Center

Consistent with the University of San Diego’s philosophy of developing the whole person, the Counseling Center’s core purpose is to enhance the emotional, relational, and psychological well-being of students. The dedicated staff strives to facilitate students’ personal growth and enhance their academic success through accessible, culturally congruent clinical outreach and services. The Counseling Center team works in collaboration with other Wellness and University departments and community partners in support of student success and well-being.

The Center’s professional staff includes psychologists, therapists, carefully selected and supervised trainees from doctoral programs in clinical and counseling psychology, and a psychiatric nurse practitioner. The Counseling Center provides a range of services, including group therapy and support groups, individual counseling, psychological and psychiatric consultation, and community referrals. 


Position Summary

The Clinical Director is responsible for general functions of the Counseling Center’s services and works collaboratively with the Senior Director of Mental and Behavioral Health to ensure the provision of inclusive mental and behavioral health services that effectively support students and align with the mission and vision of USD. In collaboration with the Senior Director, the Clinical Director oversees the delivery of high-quality, equitable clinical services; assessment services; consultation services for the university community; policy development; and recruitment, supervision, and training of all professional, trainee, and administrative support staff.  

The Clinical Director serves as a member of the Mental and Behavioral Health Collaborative Team and participates on area, divisional, and university committees and task forces. The Clinical Director provides direct service to students and manages urgent needs of students or community members after traditional business hours. Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Administrative / Leadership (50%)

    • Manages and enhances the utilization and processes of electronic medical software (Point and Click), with a specific focus on integrated care.
    • Leads assessment and evaluation efforts of clinical services and practices seeking to ensure alignment with mental and behavioral health best practices and USD’s co-curricular learning outcomes; supports continual enhancement practices that promote health equity; responsible for clinical data collection and report creation.
    • Maintains and updates policies and guidelines that align with federal, state, and local requirements and best practices for the provision of mental and behavioral health services and health equity within university settings.
    • Ensures the provision of services and supports that are consistent with university strategic initiatives, mission, and values.
    • Responsible for communication regarding services and programs, which includes creating a comprehensive review of annual clinical service activities and working closely with the health promotion team on campaigns and outreach efforts; develops and presents educational and prevention programs.
    • Maintains and enhances processes for workflow and data management related to medical leaves of absences and other Academic Affairs requests.
    • Provides training and compliance oversight regarding policies and procedures to clinical and front desk staff.
    • Coordinates triage and crisis coverage schedules and works with campus partners to ensure communication of coverage; takes a lead role on coordinating after-hours ProtoCall Services.
    • Provides direct administrative supervision and annual evaluation to assigned clinical staff and unit executive assistant; this includes coordination of various team meetings.
    • Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with colleague and campus partners to best support the well-being of individuals and the campus community during crisis situations; supports Integrated Care processes and meetings, Sensitive Issues Team (SIT) meetings, and Critical Incident Response Team meetings when needed.
    • Exhibits a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all professional activities and duties; is able to infuse anti-racism practices into clinical services, programs, and recruitment efforts.
    • Assumes Senior Director responsibilities, participates in and leads various campus committees/task forces when requested, and engages in other administrative duties assigned.

Urgent Direct Services / Crisis Intervention (25%)

    • Urgent and crisis intervention includes coverage of MHBH triage hours and additional support for triage during peak times, after-hours crisis response, and clinical supervision of interns and other trainees.
    • Assessment of potential for suicide, homicide, or other risk factors.
    • Assessment for possible hospitalization/need for intensive mental health care.
    • Initiates legally mandated reporting of suspected child abuse or elder abuse, as required by clinical license.
    • Initiates legally mandated reporting of risk or danger to others.
    • Provides care coordination of student(s), families/caregivers, USD community partners, and external community partners and ensure all clinical follow-up occurs, as appropriate.
    • Provides individual or group debriefings/postvention interventions in response to distressing events.
    • On a rotating basis, available for after-hours, emergency consultation with university officials, ProtoCall counseling services, students, families and other stakeholders.

Psychological Assessment, Short-term Counseling for Students (15%)

    • Conducts comprehensive psychological assessments.
    • Develops treatment plans based on diagnostic information. 
    • Conducts individual, group, couples, and family counseling and psychotherapy following legal, clinical, ethical, and professional standards.
    • Provides referrals to agencies and practitioners, internal and external to USD. Engages in clinical care coordination activities. 

Consultation and Training (10%)

    • Provides consultation, training, and support to various stakeholders within the campus community.
    • Develops and provide seminars for interns and other trainees, as needed to support an APA approved predoctoral clinical training program, other clinical training efforts and the needs of the USD community.  
    • Provides clinical supervision to interns and other trainees, as assigned to support an APA approved predoctoral clinical training program, other clinical training efforts and the needs of the USD community.  

All of the time allocations listed are approximate and will vary significantly depending on demand for services and other factors.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology; APA-accredited academic program or internship preferred. 
  • At least 7 years licensed and currently licensed as a psychologist, and if not licensed in California, licensed-eligible in California
  • Minimum of 7 years of direct clinical experience after completion of degree. 
  • Experience supervising professional staff. 
  • Experience managing administrative responsibilities in a supervisory role at a university or a similar multidisciplinary organization. 


Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent clinical and supervisory skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience as an outstanding leader with conflict resolution, decision making, and implementation skills. 
  • Special interest coursework, supervisory experience, and programming background in a university or comparable setting. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and behavioral health crisis response and assessment. 
  • Commitment to holistic student development, integrated care, the mission, vision, and strategic plan of USD. 
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills: ability to work with various University constituents including parents, students, administration, and staff as well as San Diego community professionals. 
  • Ability to maintain the utmost level of confidentiality in accordance with the FERPA and other applicable federal, state, and professional laws or guidelines. 
  • Desire and ability to seek continuing education and professional development opportunities, including liaisons to professional associations, in order to remain current in field.
