The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Medical Director for the Student Health Center. The Medical Director provides strategic direction, clinical leadership, and oversight for services in RIT’s AAAHC-accredited Student Health Center; offering comprehensive primary health care services and education to a culturally diverse population of approximately 15,400 undergraduate and 3,200 graduate students, including approximately 1200 students enrolled in the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, one of RIT’s nine colleges. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Wellness (AVP), the Medical Director is responsible for oversight of all aspects of clinical care at the Student Health Center, and is responsible for the supervision of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, nursing assistants, and administrative professionals, while also providing primary health care service to students. RIT’s student health programs and services are guided by an inclusive and integrated service model, promoting a high degree of collaboration across service areas, including primary care, women’s health, mental health, services for students with disabilities, prevention, and health education. The Director will work closely with the student run RIT Ambulance, facilitating the important role it plays to support emergency medical response on campus. It is in this context that the Medical Director will serve an important, collaborative leadership role for student wellness, working closely not only with the Student Health Center, but also with Counseling & Psychological Services, Disability Services, and Health Promotion teams across the University.  The successful candidate will work with external partners and community agencies in contributing to the enhancement of learning and student success at RIT. The Medical Director will also serve as a key liaison and consultant on a broad range of public health and other issues with medical implications at RIT.

Successful candidates should have a strong record of medical/clinical supervision and administrative experience, including evidence of innovation in service delivery and knowledge of public health and wellness related issues affecting university students. Candidates must have outstanding clinical judgment, compassion, and interpersonal skills with ability to develop a broad institutional perspective and work collaboratively with counseling and wellness services and other campus partners. Equally significant qualifications include an ability to work well with a globally diverse student body and a broad, systems perspective with regard to health promotion, campus/community health and wellbeing, disease prevention, and treatment of illness and injury.

This is a full-time, 12-month, senior administrative position. RIT provides competitive and attractive benefits.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • MD or DO degree with board certification in internal medicine, family medicine, and/or emergency medicine;
  • Licensure to practice in current state jurisdiction, and license-eligibility in the state of New York;
  • At least 8-10 years of post-doctoral, direct clinical experience and at least 6-8 years of clinical-administrative/leadership experience, and/or progressively responsible, relevant experience;
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience of professional staff;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal statutes and regulations pertaining to health care organizations;
  • Understanding of young adult contemporary healthcare issues and the skills to work effectively with a college-age population, international students, faculty, and staff;
  • Ability to foster a climate of inclusion, where diverse thoughts are shared and integrated; ability to understand and empathize with differences in peoples and cultures, respects different value sets, is comfortable with diversity; is also experienced at finding common ground among different perspectives and setting the stage for building consensus;
  • Excellent communications skills, oral, written and digital, including the ability to convey clinical information in accessible terms to a variety of audiences;
  • A systems thinker with a strategic mindset that aligns with the direction of the new organizational model for student, health, counseling, and wellness;
  • Proven ability to manage resources, including financial, human, and physical, to maximize productivity and ensure the highest quality of work;
  • High emotional intelligence and humility and a commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards;
  • Enthusiastic about self-improvement and the professional development of clinical and non- clinical staff; proven ability to hire, promote, mentor, and supervise, and succeed in inspiring trust and teamwork in motivating staff to work hard and well together;
  • Demonstrated ability to bring about complex change in a thoughtful manner and implement solutions utilizing best practices tailored to the unique needs of the institution;
  • Commitment to quality improvement in practice including measurement, data analytics, and evidence-based medicine;
  • Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) or a willingness to learn;
  • Embracing of innovative approaches to advance healthcare delivery and practice;
  • Flexibility, resilience, perseverance, and a good sense of humor.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of statutes and regulations specific to higher education;
  • Experience working in a higher education health center.
