Extraordinary Opportunity to Lead Change in Addressing Community Wellbeing

The University of Connecticut, the state’s flagship institution serving over 30,000 students, is seeking an innovative leader to provide vision, direction, and inspiration. The Director will focus on addressing student wellbeing by promoting a healthy campus community and culture through the development and nurturing of coalitions to address concerns from a population-level perspective. The Director will have the opportunity to develop and refine an approach that emphasizes the creation of a community of wellness by engaging with all facets of the University to support large-scale strategies around health and wellbeing. This is an exciting role for an experienced professional who wants to lead a transformation that will result in a national model for supporting students and providing them with an environment that actively encourages healthy behaviors that will become part of their daily lives while at UConn and beyond graduation.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Health, Counseling, and Wellness, and serving as a member of the Executive Director’s leadership team, the Director’s efforts will focus on building a resilient and healthy campus community. To be successful, the Director must have a deep understanding of models for impacting communities on issues of health and wellbeing, be able to engage with stakeholders across the institution to facilitate partnerships, and possess the management and supervisory skills necessary to lead significant change. It will be the responsibility of the Director to generate enthusiasm and support for this new approach that will benefit from models in and out of higher education while being specifically designed and developed for the UConn community.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Director

The Director of Health Promotion and Community Impact is responsible for engaging in social and environmental strategies and interventions which enhance student health and wellbeing at the community level. The Director will lead the department through a transformation from a focus on individual behavior to a strategic public health/health promotion approach.  The Director will promote a healthy campus culture, create proactive strategies to help the student population achieve improved physical and mental health, and improve student access to resources and skills to manage stress and promote resiliency. The Director will collectively engage, plan, and coordinate cross-functional connections and collaborations to create health and wellbeing across the UConn campuses. Key responsibilities include vision-setting, partnership development and engagement, advocacy, strategic and financial planning, budget management, and excellence in talent development.

  • Lead the transition from a transactional, individual behavioral change approach to creating an infrastructure that focuses on population-level objectives to enhance health at the community level, primarily focusing on proactive strategies to help students achieve improved health and well-being.
  • Develop and implement an approach around student health and wellness that equips faculty, staff, and advisors with the necessary education and training to support students appropriately. 
  • Implement a public health/health promotion model for wellness at UConn, including infusing wellness values within and across academic and personal support spheres; shared ownership of wellness across campus; and being the clearinghouse of health promotion and wellness outreach programs and initiatives for the university.
  • Build the identity of the Department of Health Promotion as a respected, neutral convener among a broad spectrum of local stakeholders for public health initiatives. Build and maintain relationships with community partners, cultivating excellent working relationships with campus and community peers and leaders in a way that can inspire collective action without formal authority.
  • Oversee the development of a public health/health promotion set of strategies that will drive transformative change in student health and wellness at the population level, updating the strategy as new needs emerge, under the direction of the Executive Director.
  • Provide visionary and dynamic leadership and management to create and sustain a high-performing team of employees.
  • Establish, facilitate, and execute active and open communication with staff, particularly related to internal decisions and strategy.  Create a systematic approach to developing, coaching and mentoring staff to adapt and be flexible to ever-changing student and campus needs.
  • Manage annual planning and budgeting processes in partnership with the Executive Director. Identify capacity gaps and create plans that acknowledge and plan for possible organizational growth and priority changes.
  • Oversee daily operations, establishing and maintaining appropriate systems for measuring the effectiveness of operational management. Monitoring and reporting to the Executive Director on operational issues, opportunities, and achievements. 
  • Serve as a strong, neutral, and skilled facilitator who can guide the team, partners, and stakeholders towards consensus and defined shared vision and results.
  • Ensure effective facilitation of all Work Group and Strategy Group meetings for public health initiatives and provide regular reports on group progress against goals and indicators. Maintain an understanding of current implementation challenges and developing comprehensive solutions to address them.
  • Coordinate outreach and other activities with initiative partners to minimize redundancies and to align strategies, including conducting individual outreach and education as needed.
  • Advocate for capacity-building strategies that advance health equity across individual identities which include race, color, ethnicity, religious creed, age, sex, marital status, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, genetic information, physical or mental disability, veteran status, gender identity or expression.
  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Data Analytics department to develop and implement a shared measurement system that will track common outcomes and indicators across initiatives and use results to inform learning and continuous improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Data Analytics team to collect and use actionable data to determine continuous improvement opportunities, to effectively align resources to meet those needs, and to influence decision-making.  Partner to ensure that data is integrated and communicated effectively across the organization.


  • Master’s in Public Health or related field required
  • 8 years of relevant work experience required; 10 or more preferred
  • 3 years of managerial experience required; 5 or more preferred
  • Demonstrated advanced strategy and planning skills, organizational skills and project management skills.
  • Understanding of the various components of public health models and/or collective impact models, and the application of those models to a higher education setting.
  • Ability to apply evidence-based practices to improve student health outcomes.
  • Demonstrated history in organizing and building coalitions between a wide range of stakeholders, such as University divisions, municipal and state officials, hospital staff, primary service providers, and diverse community members.
  • Demonstrated understanding of theories in human development, models of support in the practice of community-based health, and the cognitive and brain development of students.
  • Demonstrated work in addressing specific health problems, the populations in which they serve, and the context in which programs can be successful.
