Brian Mistler, PhD, LCP, SHRM-SCP

Brian Mistler brings a distinctive combination of talents, roles, and experiences in and out of higher education to his work with K&A. He has dedicated his career to transformative change, creating attractive work environments and increasing access to sustainable, high-quality healthcare. Dr. Mistler has worked in higher education for more than 20 years, including more than a decade in AVP Health & Wellbeing positions, most recently at Tulane University and Cal Poly Humboldt. He has overseen large capital projects, including two new health center designs, and managed numerous accreditation cycles.
Brian has taught throughout his career at universities and hospitals, served as principal investigator for federal grants, served as faculty in the NASPA Higher Ed. Law Program, is a nationally-recognized suicide prevention expert, and has held leadership positions with the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD) and The American College Health Association (ACHA). He has served on the boards of NASPA Region VI, the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, and the Journal of College and University Student Housing.
In addition to his work with K&A, Brian frequently supports turnaround and growth-stage chief executive officers with strategic planning, mergers, and acquisitions. He served for 5 years as an executive in private healthcare, including as Chief Operating and Financial Officer and President, where he led the change management processes that took a struggling corporation to profitability and secured major insurance contracts and venture-capital investments that produced 3x topline growth in 18 months. He also oversaw risk management and executive searches for a rapidly scaling multi-state telehealth company as Chief People Officer and Senior Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and is an HR Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and exam developer for the Society of Human Resource Management.
A first-generation college student, Brian earned a BS/BA (Computer Science, Philosophy, and Humanities) at Stetson University. He then received an M.A. (International Conflict Resolution) from the University of Bradford as Rotary Scholar to the UK; Postgrad Certification (Financial Management) from Cornell University; Lean Six Sigma & Lean Enterprise Certification (Global Supply Chain Management) from McGill University; and a PhD (Counseling Psychology / organizational change) from the University of Florida. He lives with his partner where the ocean meets the ancient redwoods in Northern California and enjoys camping, sailing, and pickleball.
