Melvyn D. Schiavelli

Dr. Schaivelli, brings more than 50 years of experience in various higher education settings to the K&A’s projects. He most recently served as Interim President at Northern Virginia Community College.
Mel earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He taught at the College of William and Mary, the University of Utah, and the University of Delaware during his 50-year career in higher education. He served as a faculty member, department chair, dean, provost and interim president at the College of William and Mary and as provost at the University of Delaware. More recently he served as the founding president of the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. Mel has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters as well as written extensively on higher education topics and STEM education. He has been an invited speaker at universities in the United States, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Yugoslavia, Korea, Japan, and China.
His recent accomplishments include leading the establishment of the first comprehensive university and an affiliated SciTech Magnet HS opened in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in over 100 years. Mel enjoys summer days in Florence, Italy, and looks forward to sipping wine in Tuscany (with his dog, Bruno) after the current crisis subsides.
