Monroe is a Global Leadership Strategist and Consultant, and a Professor of the Practice in the Jonathan Tisch College of Civic Life, at Tufts University. He is a global leadership strategist and consultant who has a passion for co-creating and partnering with leaders to cultivate transformative institutions across fields and sectors. Monroe is the former inaugural Vice Provost for Institutional Inclusive Excellence at Tufts University and he continues to hold a professor of practice position at the Jonathan Tisch College of Civic Life. Previous to his executive leadership role at Tufts, Monroe served as the Senior Associate Vice President for Global Engagement and Inclusive Leadership in the Office of Global Inclusion and Strategic Innovation at New York University (NYU).
Monroe’s career at NYU spanned nearly 20 years and he has more than 25 years of progressive leadership experience in global higher education, social and corporate sectors, arts & creative industries, as well as humanitarian, and philanthropy initiatives at all levels including being an executive c-suite leader in higher education, professor, consultant across industries, strategist, and coach to other leaders. While at NYU, Monroe founded and was the primary principal for the Global Inclusive Leadership and Management Institute and NYU’s Environmental and Justice Institute.
After completing a BA in English and African American Literature from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, Monroe received a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration and a graduate degree in Cultural Studies in Education from The Ohio State University. In 2006, he completed a degree in merchandise management and marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology. He has studied at NYU, Teacher’s College, Columbia University, Harvard Kennedy School, Berkeley Leadership Academy and community-based programs in Mexico and Turkey.
Monroe has held teaching positions at NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU School of Social Work, and in the NYU Steinhardt Higher Education and Student Affairs Program. He is a former visiting thought leader for Woxsen University in India and a former visiting scholar for the University of Southern Maine’s school of business where he facilitated a year-long faculty development program.
Monroe has provided leadership and strategic consulting for executive managers across the globe at organizations such as the American Eagle Outfitter (AEO) and Unilever Global, the executive team for American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University, and the management team at the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) in Washington DC. He works regularly with the United Nations, UN Women and he has served as a consultant to a number of United Nations’ affiliates globally. Monroe is a published scholar; he has been featured on national television, radio, on-line platforms, and in numerous print pieces, including appearances on MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry Show.
Monroe has expertise as a strategic relationship builder and educator who has cultivated cross-sector partnerships across the globe focused on transformational innovation and strategic change. Monroe has given lectures and keynotes on these topics on six continents and he has written articles and given lectures across the globe on the future of higher education and work.
Monroe holds numerous volunteer leadership roles and he commits time to not-for-profit board service, civic engagement and global human rights initiatives. Monroe is the board president for Global Black Pride, a board member for the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, a member of Hacking HR, and he leads the transformational leadership initiative with the Future Talent Council.
