The Director position has been modified and will now report to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Health, Counseling and Well-Being. The position will supervise four Assistant Directors and will oversee a collaborative leadership model to best support the staff and better serve our students. In the past two years, we have significantly expanded our team and offerings, including a new Therapist in Residence program and expanded group therapy. Position Overview

The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a senior leader within the Cowell Center and is responsible for providing overall direction, management and clinical leadership and supervision to the culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff. This position is both accountable and responsible for ensuring that CAPS vision, policies and practices are in alignment with Santa Clara University’s vision and values. The Director of CAPS is administratively focused and will also provide direct clinical services to a small client caseload. CAPS is committed to the values of multiculturalism, social justice, and student learning, and is dedicated to providing culturally informed, mental health services for SCU’s diverse student population. This position promotes the psychological well-being of the student body and supports best practices of mental health services to students while supporting the vision of the University to make student learning a central goal by facilitating the psychological well-being of the student body.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree required in counseling or clinical psychology from an accredited program in psychology; Doctorate degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) preferred.
  • 12 years experience in counseling.
  • A minimum of four to six years of progressive experience related to providing and leading mental health services and staff, preferably in a university, college, or higher education setting.
  • Currently licensed in the State of California or another state with the ability to transfer licensure within 12 months to the State of California.
  • Prior experience addressing the needs of a diverse university student population, preferred.
  • Knowledge of Title IX, mental health and disability laws preferred.

  • Exceptional clinical acumen and ability to provide effective clinical supervision.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for engagement across campus constituencies – students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Appropriate application of student development theories into CAPS policies and practices.
  • Ability to design and implement exceptional clinical care with appropriately balanced use of available technology platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology, data, and literature and research in improving the delivery and evaluation of programs and services.
  • Proven track record at recruiting and retaining exceptional clinical staff.
